I was glad to share my cover of wonderwall this week.
I learned to play the piano like many musical greats--playing piano for the church
However, I didn't know how to play the piano until I learned on a church piano.
I had NOTHING going for me when I was 14...my parents' took me out of school and homeschooled me in Alaska. It was a homeschool that meant to keep me from the pollution of the evils of the world. The evils of the world included radio, as well as most movies and TV
No social life. I spent a lot of time in churches...And at the library.
I learned to pick out melodies at the piano, but I wanted more. I memorized the fingering for all the chords, so I could quickly hit all of them
but that's not enough to play a song. I finally got a few sessions with a different church piano player and she showed me how to build a bass progression
Then I knew how to do it. The church put me on the Hammond B3 organ and eventually the piano
STILL not allowed to listen to anything but church music.
and not allowed to speak in front of church without the preacher's permission
I eventually got a Casio keyboard...I played it to DEATH
But I remember listening to the barely tolerated Amy Grant and dreaming of where else I might be in the world
she was in Nashville
I sang and played and it kept me sane.
when I grew up and escaped into the world, I had more things to explore
Music is still there for me
Maybe I'll get to Nashville one day
